Dave Chappelle and John Mayer paid tribute to the late Charlie Murphy who lost his battle with leukemia earlier this week. At Mayer’s Columbus, Ohio show Wednesday Mayer invited his friend Dave Chappelle onstage towards the end of the show.
Murphy starred in Chappelle’s “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories.” Mayer and Chappelle shared stories and jokes before Dave mentioned news of Murphy’s death.
“My good friend Charlie Murphy passed away this morning, and everybody in comedy is heartbroken,” Chappelle said, before asking Mayer to play a song for Murphy. He urged the crowd to put their phones away so they could “make a memory that only we have.”
“Rest in peace, Charlie Murphy. We love you. We love your comedy. We love your stories, and we love your spirit,” Chappelle said, as Mayer began playing “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me.”
