AU’s President Confronts Racism On Campus, DC City Council Votes On Mayor’s Choice for Chief of Police…

AU’s President calls for a campus meeting following a racist act Monday….

American University President Neil Kerwin has called a Noon time campus-wide meeting. This follows banana’s with nooses around them found at, at least three locations on the campus. Kerwin vowed to take strong action against those involved in the cowardly and despicable act. The bananas had the letter’s AKA on them. They showed up on the same day that the first African-American female was sworn in as student government president. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

As a professor at @americanuniversity this saddens me. It's difficult to imagine students feeling supported in taking the intellectual and social risks required to optimize exploring the world and their place within it if they don't feel safe. As a member of a Panhellenic organization, this makes me angry. Daily… racial and ethnic, language and sexual minorities, individuals who have a disability or otherwise show up in non-traditional ways seek relationships and strategies to overcome battling against a system that refuses to acknowledge our humanity…many of our organizations were founded in response to this need and it's clear that some of you disrespectful, ignorant and insecure recipients of privilege are going to let your desire for the wrong type of attention get you caught up. Some of you think your President had made it acceptable for you to celebrate the convergence of ignorance and privilege. Your president is going to get a few of y'all πŸ€•πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ™…πŸΎπŸ€¦πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ'ed up. #TryIt #DontGetShook #YouDontWantNoProblems #istandwithLambdaZeta @lambdazeta1908
