Homeland Security Secretary Regrets Quick Implementation Of Travel Ban
Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly says he regrets President Trump’s travel ban executive order was implemented so quickly. Kelly told a Congressional hearing on border security today that he considers the order — quote — “lawful and constitutional” but that he regrets the speed with which it was rolled out. Kelly fears that without the order, people could have come into the U.S. to do harm to the country. He says he shoulders all the responsibility and that a delay would have allowed him to talk to members of Congress before it was implemented. A legal challenge to the ban is being heard in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today.
DC Council Members Invite Utah Congressman To Meeting
Since Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz is so interested in legislating the District of Columbia, more and more DC Council members are inviting him to meetings. Council member Mary Cheh has sent a letter to Chaffetz, inviting him to meetings this month of the Council’s Committee on Transportation. Under the new Republican-led Congress, Chaffetz has taken the lead on DC oversight and has effectively stripped down some of the city’s enacted laws as a result. Cheh says Chaffetz should attend some of the Council meetings so that he “may better understand the potential effects of your actions in conducting your own oversight.”
