LA Schools Officials Explains Decision To Close Schools

The Los Angeles Schools Superintendent says he made the decision to close the district’s schools after talking with various officials about a threat.  More than 700-thousand students were affected by the decision.  Schools Superintendent Ramon Cortines [[ kor-TEEN-ez ]] said everything is being done to ensure the safety of the district’s students, but it’s being done in as calming a manner as possible.  Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said he supports today’s closure.  He said the city’s emergency operations center has been activated, but at its lowest level.

Freddie Gray Jury Continues Deliberations Today

Jury deliberations in the trial of a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray are continuing today.  The seven-woman, five-man panel is considering charges of involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct against Baltimore Officer William Porter.  After several hours of deliberations yesterday, the jury was sent home for the evening.  Porter is accused of failing to seatbelt Gray in a police van as well as failing to seek immediate medical attention for him when he indicated he was hurt.

GOP Candidates Face Off In Last Presidential Debate Of 2015

The stage is set for tonight’s Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas.  Frontrunner Donald Trump will face off with Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and his other top rivals at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time on CNN.  It’s first such debate since the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino and since Trump made his controversial call to ban Muslims for entering the U.S.

Deadline Reminders From Postal Service, UPS, FedEx

Christmas mailing deadlines are coming up fast.  The Postal Service says today is the last day to send things with standard shipping for delivery on time.  December 19th is the deadline for First Class.  UPS says December 18th, this Friday, is the deadline for 3-Day Select service.  At FedEx, Wednesday is the deadline for shipping FedEx Ground with delivery before Christmas.
