No Charges Against Officer After Probe Of 2nd Chicago Police Shooting

Prosecutors in Chicago say a police officer will not be charged in the 2014 shooting death of an armed black man.  The Cook County State’s Attorney said that after an independent investigation, there was not enough evidence to bring charges against Officer George Hernandez for the shooting of Ronald Johnson.  Dash-cam video shows Hernandez firing at Johnson who is running away from officers but prosecutors say Johnson had failed to comply with officers’ orders to drop his weapon.  Attorney General Loretta Lynch is ordering an investigation into the practices of the Chicago Police Department. 

Attorney General Announces Civil Rights Probe Of Chicago PD

The Justice Department is opening a civil rights investigation into the Chicago Police Department.  The department has been under fire for the handling of a case involving a black teenager who was shot and killed by a white police officer in October of last year.  Lynch said there can be profound consequences when a community loses faith in its police department.  Seventeen year old Laquan McDonald was shot 16 times. 

First Full Week of Testimony in Freddie Gray Trial Underway

The trial against one of six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray is getting testy today.  Lawyers for William Porter are challenging the medical examiner who ruled that Gray’s death was a homicide and not accidental.  During cross-examination, they accused medical examiner Carol Allen of giving in to political pressure.  Gray died in April after suffering a spinal injury in a police van.  His death sparked days of often-violent unrest across the city. 

Redskins Host Cowboys On Monday Night Football 

The Dallas Cowboys take on the Washington Redskins in an NFC East matchup on “Monday Night Football.”  The Redskins are coming off a 20-14 win over the Giants in Week 12 that vaulted them to the top of the division at 5-and-6.  Washington has traded wins and losses in its last six games, but has won five in a row at home since a season-opening loss to Miami.
