Suspected Serial Sex Assault Offender Arrested

A man linked to at least five sexual assaults and attempted sexual assaults in the District is under arrest.  DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier says Melvin Latney started committing crimes the day he left a halfway house on November 24th.  Lanier says video of Latney helped detectives track him down yesterday.  Latney is also accused of committing robberies.

Mayor Bowser Signs New Anti-Crime Bill

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is signing a new anti-crime bill that gives property owners incentives to install exterior security cameras.  The measure provides rebates of up to 200-dollars per camera purchase.  The cameras must be registered with the DC Police Department, which will have access to the footage.  There’s a maximum rebate of 500-dollars for the owners of residential buildings and a maximum rebate of 750-dollars for the owners of businesses, commercial property and nonprofit or religious institutions.

Eight At House Office Building Hospitalized

Eight people are hospitalized after the discovery of a suspicious substance at the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill.  Ten people were evaluated this morning and a DC Fire Department spokesman says the symptoms are minor.  There are reports that some kitchen workers may have been exposed to lead after construction work. 

Report:  Freddie Gray Officer Was Nearly Acquitted

The Baltimore police officer who went on trial in the death of Freddie Gray was nearly acquitted.  The “Baltimore Sun” reports sources familiar with the deliberations say the jury voted eleven-to-one to acquit Officer William Porter of involuntary manslaughter.  The vote helped lead the judge to declare a mistrial last month.  The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on any of the four counts against Porter.  Prosecutors are planning to retry him in June.
