Lawmakers move forward with separate bills to fund DHS….

The Senate has approved a bill that fully funds the Department of Homeland Security until September of this year. The bill does not mention anything about immigration, a sticking point for GOP leaders. The meanwhile, House is working on a separate bill that would fund DHS for 3 weeks, so lawmakers can work out a long term budget. Leaders have until midnight tonight to reach a budget agreement our the security agency will have to enact a partial government shutdown.

It’s all hands on deck for trash collection in the District…

Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued an “All Hand on Deck” initiative today to deal with the back up of trash because of days of snow and icy weather. The Department of Public Works has brought in outside contractors to help spread salt and clear snow from alleys. Officials expect to have all residential trash picked up within the next 72 hours.

An African American history maker dies….

The first African American to play in the NBA Earl Lloyd has passed away. The 86 year old was from Alexandria, Virginia. He played his first NBA game with the Washington Capitols back in 1950. He also coached in the NBA and was inducted in the Naismith Hall of Fame.
