Joe Scarborough Quits Republican Party

Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s political commentary segment Morning Joe,” has chosen to cut ties with the Republican Party.

Scarborough announced that he is leaving the GOP yesterday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”

New York Daily News reports that Scarborough stated, “I am a Republican but I’m not going to be a Republican anymore,” Scarborough explained to Stephen Colbert, “I’ve got to become an Independent.”

Throughout the show, Scarborough further explained his decision to leave the Republican Party. He claims the Republican Party has now grown stagnant and as a collective, the party is reluctant to stand up to President Trump.

The Washington Post reports that Scarborough stated to Colbert, “You have to ask yourself, what exactly is the Republican Party willing to do?” “How far are they willing to go? How much of this country and our values are they willing to sell out?”

In the last few months, Scarborough has been under scrutiny from President Trump and his administration for his fierce criticisms of his leadership capabilities and attitude in the White House. This strained relationship has worsened tremendously in the last few weeks due to Scarborough’s co-host Mika Brzezinski’s comments on President Trump’s mental abilities in a conversation on their show. The President responded negatively by calling the hosts “Psycho Joe and “low-I. Q. Crazy Mika.”

After viewing the tweets, Scarborough and Brzezinski completely rejected the President’s comments claiming that they were untrue and distasteful.

Both hosts stated, “ The Donald Trump we knew before the campaign was a flawed character but one who still seemed capable of keeping his worst instincts in check.“

Scarborough has been the more traditional and conservative voice of “Morning Joe” for several years along with his co-host Brzezinski. He served as a U.S. congressman from Florida for about six years and was a part of the New Federalists, an organization for young Republican congressmen. Scarborough has undoubtedly been a significant force within the Republican Party for years. His recent claims to leave the party will definitely continue to stir up political conversations around the nation.
