Kaepernick To Be Invited To NFL Meeting, Two Dead In GSU Shooting

Injured Firefighter Returning Home

A rookie DC firefighter who was critically injured in a freak accident is going home. Dane Smothers was responding to a fire in Northeast Washington on August 2nd when he was struck by a ladder truck. He was left with multiple injuries above the waist and required months of surgeries and rehabilitation. Today, he’s being discharged from his medical assistance facility and is going home after what fire officials call a “remarkable” recovery.

Kaepernick To Be Invited To NFL Meeting

Outspoken free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick is expected to be invited to the next meeting between NFL owners and players. NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart says Kaepernick will be invited by the players. However, it’s unclear if he will accept the invitation and attend the meeting, which is scheduled for next Tuesday in New York. Kaepernick was also invited to a meeting on October 17th, but did not attend. He filed a grievance against NFL owners two days prior, alleging they colluded to keep him out of the league. Kaepernick became the first player to kneel during the national anthem last season to protest social injustice.

Two Dead In GSU Shooting

Police say a dorm room altercation led to a fatal shooting at Louisiana’s Grambling State University early this morning. Two men are dead, one of them a student, and the shooter is still at large. The victims were shot in an outside courtyard. Both men were 23-years-old and from Farmerville, Louisiana. No lockdown was put in place on campus but students were told to stay inside. Grambling State University Director of University Communications Will Sutton called the incident a horrible tragedy and said “Our prayers are with the victims and their families.”

Actor Robert Guillaume Dead At 89

Emmy Award-winning actor Robert Guillaume, who portrayed the surly butler Benson DuBois on the comedy series “Soap,” is dead. Guillaume died yesterday in Los Angeles and had been battling prostate cancer. He was 89. Guillaume earned two Emmys for playing Benson, one for Best Supporting Actor on “Soap” in 1979, the second for Best Actor on the spinoff series “Benson” in 1985. An accomplished theater actor, he also played Isaac Jaffee in the ABC drama “Sports Night” and voiced the mandrill Rafiki in “The Lion King.”

Fats Domino Dead At 89

The music world is mourning the death of Fats Domino. Domino’s daughter says the singer was surrounded by family and friends when he passed away at the age of 89. The music legend was known for his songs “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t That a Shame” and “Walkin’ To New Orleans.” He was honored with a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 1987. “Rolling Stone” magazine listed Fats Domino as the “25th Greatest Recording Artist of All Time.”
