The District Kicks Off #BecomingMPD

This year alone the Mayor plans to provide $3 million dollars to expand the city’s police work force to 4,000 officers by 2021.

This morning DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and city leaders and law enforcement officials will team up to launch #BecomingMPD. It’s a campaign to encourage District residents to become police officers.

At 11:30 a.m. Mayor Bowser along with Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham will officially announce the details of #BecomingMPD. The leaders will also take this time to introduce the public to the cities newest police recruits at the Metropolitan Police Academy.

Mayor Bowser has created and funded a number of program and initiative to improve MPD’s recruitment efforts since 2016. Some of programs include the Anacostia Public Safety Academy, The Recruit Six-Month Rental Assistance Program and the Employer-Assisted Housing Program. This year alone the Mayor plans to provide $3 million dollars to expand the city’s police work force to 4,000 officers by 2021.
