The importance of today’s midterm elections has been emphasized heavily with celebrity endorsements and substantial media coverage. Ride sharing apps, food chains and a number of retailers are offering customers discounts and freebies in honor of Election Day.

It is however against federal law to offer freebies in exchange for voting. According to United States Code of Laws:

Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and Whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote–Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

This felonious crime has caused many companies to change their free offers. The Field Museum in Chicago was offering free admission to those with proof of voting today, but since has changed the offer to free admission to all on today regardless of voting proof. Potbelly was offering a free cookie to customers with an “I Voted” sticker. They have since changed their offer to a free cookie with any entree today and tomorrow.

Here are some of the offers valid in the Washington D.C. area today:
