Super-producer, Mara Brock Akil, is producing a new show based on her relationship with her husband, fellow creator Yasim Akil, ‘Love is,’ on Oprah Winfrey’s network OWN which is set to premiere tonight, Tuesday, June 19, at 10/9c.

The show, set in 90’s Los Angeles, features as the show’s protagonists, Nuri and Yasir, as “a couple from seemingly opposite worlds, as they chase their dreams and learn to follow their hearts in black Hollywood.”

As its told from the perspectives of their present-day selves, the show depicts the character’s reflections on problems and social issues that plagued young African Americans finding love and how its shaped their lives as a power couple balances successful careers and a family.

“I don’t really think we’ve really seen the humanity of black love deep enough,” she explained to Variety. “I treated the direction of this almost like an independent film or a foreign film because…that is how I feel our existence is in this country is. We’re foreigners, so we have to tell our stories in ways that celebrate our own beauty and even our own flaws. And we invite the audience into that conversation so it will then open them up and the conversation will evolve.”
