Getting In Some Big Shopping On Small Business Saturday

“I came out today to get a little something to eat because I was tired of eating Thanksgiving food. I had no idea when I came in to get a cup of my favorite gumbo that you guys would be here treating me,” said Alicia from NE.

Washington, D.C. (Monday, November 30, 2019) – Did you know that for every dollar you spend in a small local business, more than 60-cents of that dollar is typically generated back into the local community?  That’s just one of the key reasons why WHUR and Wells Fargo wanted to do some big shopping this weekend right in the DMV.  Saturday marked Small Business Saturday,  a day dedicated to supporting small businesses and communities across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

WHUR and Wells Fargo hit the streets to patronize small businesses at Union Market, the Anacostia Arts Center, and the Shops at Iverson.  It was all part of  “Pay It Forward,” an initiative launched last summer to pop-up weekly at various business establishments to pay the bills of unsuspecting customers.  Saturday customers at District Doughnut, DC Puddin’, DC Proper, Tropical Smoothie, and Mahogany Books all got big surprises when WHUR Digital Reporter Candice Adkins announced “put your money away.  Your purchase is on us, courtesy of WHUR and Wells Fargo.”

“I came out today to get a little something to eat because I was tired of eating Thanksgiving food.  I had no idea when I came in to get a cup of my favorite gumbo that you guys would be here treating me,” said Alicia from NE.  “This is really kind and very surprising.”  Alicia’s response was echoed many times over as WHUR and Wells Fargo went to the different small businesses buying things like books, doughnuts, lunch, smoothies, sweat shirts, and more.  “We are so appreciative that WHUR and Wells Fargo chose our business to ‘pay it forward’ because this helps other to know about who we are and what we do,” said Michael Warren – Owner of DC Proper.

At a time when so many people go about their day being victims of rude or discourteous behavior, WHUR and Wells Fargo are working to spark a movement of generosity and kindness with Pay It Forward.  Just imagine the next time you’re in line feeling irritated that the line is moving slowly and WHUR and Wells Fargo said “I’ll pay for his/hers too.” That’s likely to put a smile on your face and encourage you to do the same the next time for someone else.
