Senate Pulls The Plug On Repeal-Replace Of Obamacare

Senate Republicans are abandoning healthcare reform this year. Lawmakers announced the decision today. It comes a day after Maine Republican Susan Collins effectively voiced her opposition to the Graham-Cassidy healthcare overhaul bill. Collins says she’d join two other GOP lawmakers in voting against the GOP bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. Some lawmakers voiced fear it would take too much money away from Medicaid. Lead sponsor Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said the legislation would be revisited after addressing the issue of tax reform.

Federal Bribery Charges Brought Against Top NCAA Coaches

An acting U.S. Attorney in New York is giving details on fraud and bribery taking place in the NCAA. Joon H. Kim announced today at a press conference that federal criminal charges have been brought against ten people, including four top-tier college basketball assistant coaches, managers, financial advisers and representatives of a major international sportswear company, widely reported to be Adidas. Kim says coaches at some of the nation’s top programs took cash bribes to deliver star athletes to an adviser or agent.

Long, Tough Road Ahead For Puerto Rico

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke warns that Puerto Rico faces a long, tough road to recovery. Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria. Duke and FEMA chief Brock Long briefed reporters outside the White House today. Long said recovery in Puerto Rico is challenging because of an aging infrastructure. President Trump plans to visit Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands next week.

Potomac High School Lockdown Over

Potomac High School is no longer in lockdown after an intruder and a gun were reported on campus. The Oxon Hill school was put into a precautionary lockdown this morning after an intruder was found talking with a student on campus. Prince George’s County Police say a gun was recovered while the student was being questioned. No one was injured, and the student has been taken into custody. The intruder was reportedly a former student who left campus on his own.
