NASA Insight Mission Lands On Mars

(Pasadena, CA) — A NASA spacecraft has landed on Mars. The Mars InSight lander tounched down on the Martian surface shortly before 3pm Eastern. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory says the Mars mission streaked into the planet’s atmosphere at 12-thousand miles per hour, and slowed by retro rockets and a giant parachute as it made its 77-mile descent to the ground. The lander is sitting on a smooth Martian plain close to the planet’s equator. The Insight lander will monitor seismic activity drill 16-feet underground, to give scientists a better understanding of how Mars evolved.

Former MSU President Being Arraigned

(Charlotte, MI) — Former Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon is being arraigned this morning. She’s accused of lying to police during the investigation into former gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. Simon had claimed she didn’t know Nassar was part of an investigation. She resigned as University President earlier this year after serving at the helm for 13-years. Simon faces up to four-years in prison.

Senator Booker Considers Presidential Run

(Washington, DC) — New Jersey Senator Cory Booker says he’ll consider running for president. Booker tells NJ Advance Media there are people in the Garden State and across the country who are talking to him about running for the Oval Office. He says he’ll look at 2020 and adds he’s already banked just over four-million-dollars for his Senate re-election campaign. A recently enacted state law says Booker could seek both the presidency and another term in the Senate at the same time.

Oprah Winfrey’s Mother Is Dead

(Milwaukee, WI) — Oprah Winfrey’s mother has died. Vernita Lee died at her home in Milwaukee at the age of 83. A spokesperson for Winfrey said Lee has already been laid to rest during a private funeral. Lee is survived by Winfrey and another daughter. She also had a son who died in 1989 and another daughter, who died in 2003.
