TWO VIE TO BE MARYLAND’S NEXT SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

The race to become the next Speaker of the House in Maryland is now down to two. That’s because delegate Adrienne Jones of Baltimore County has dropped out of the race. She’s thrown her support to Dereck Davis of Prince George’s County. Jones said her decision to drop out was based on galvanizing support for a African American candidate. Jones and Davis are both black.
Delegate Maggie McIntosh, of Baltimore City, who is white, is vying for the Speaker spot against Davis.  The next speaker will replace Michael Bush who died several weeks ago. If elected, Dereck Davis would be the first African American to hold the top spot in Maryland’s House of Delegates.
