Uber Driver Convicted Of Rape

(Washington, DC) — An Uber driver is facing prison time after he was found guilty of raping a woman while she was unconscious. Westagne Pierre was found guilty of second-degree rape Wednesday. The conviction stems from a 2016 incident in which he picked up a drunken woman from a DC bar, took her to a hotel room and assaulted her. He faces 20 years in prison.

Spike Lee Hopes Trump Watches KKK Film BlacKkKlansman

Director Spike Lee says he hopes President Trump will watch his newest movie, BlacKkKlansman. The film that opens today is based on the true story of a black police detective who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. Lee has said BlacKkKlansman’s release is timed to mark the one-year anniversary of last year’s violent white nationalist demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia. A woman was killed when a suspected white nationalist drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. Trump was heavily criticized after he blamed both sides for the violence.

Hogan Condemns Unite The Right Rally

(Annapolis, MD) — Maryland Governor Larry Hogan is condemning the upcoming white nationalist rally set to take place in DC Sunday. In a statement today, Hogan said hate has no place in our society, adding that white supremacists are not welcome in Maryland today, this weekend, or ever. The Republican said he’s directed state agencies, including the Maryland State Police, to coordinate with DC and Virginia to ensure things stay safe. The “Unite the Right 2” rally takes place near the White House on the anniversary of the deadly rally in Charlottesville last year that left a counter-protester dead. Large counter-protests are also expected Sunday.

Vigil Planned On Anniversary Of Deadly Explosion

(Silver Spring, MD) — Today marks two years since a deadly explosion at a Silver Spring apartment building left seven people dead. The explosion rocked the Flower Branch Apartment complex, killing five adults and two children and injuring nearly 40 others. Authorities say natural gas built up in the basement of the complex where a disconnected vent pipe was found. A vigil is planned in the community tonight to remember the victims of the tragedy. It starts at 7:30 p.m. in the lot across from the complex.
