National Portrait Gallery honor’s Aretha Franklin…

The National Portrait Gallery in DC is planning to honor the Queen of Soul. This morning a geometric portrait of Aretha Franklin will be installed in the museums In Memoriam space on the first floor. The portrait will be displayed through August 22nd.

The colorful geometric portrait was completed in 1968 by graphic designer Milton Glaser, when Franklin was just 26.

The family is still working on the details of her funeral. There are talks of having it at a museum because of the large crowds expected. Franklin was 76 years old when she lost her fight yesterday against pancreatic cancer.

Trump pulls the plug on a military parade, Mayor Bowser responds…

Amid a firestorm of concern and complaints about a military parade down the narrow streets of DC, this fall President Donald Trump has pulled the plug. Just hours after word had come out that the taxpayer bill to put together the controversial military parade in downtown DC had jumped to $92-million dollars.

Earlier this morning the President tweeted: “The local politicians who run Washington, D.C. (poorly) know a windfall when they see it. When asked to give us a price for holding a great celebratory military parade, they wanted a number so ridiculously high that I canceled it. Never let someone hold you up! I will instead attend the big parade already scheduled at Andrews Air Force Base on a different date, & go to the Paris parade, celebrating the end of the War, on November 11th. Maybe we will do something next year in D.C. when the cost comes WAY DOWN. Now we can buy some more jet fighters!”

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser waisted no time and responded with her own tweet: “Yup, I’m Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington DC, the local politician who finally got thru to the reality star in the White House with the realities ($21.6M) of parades/events/demonstrations in Trump America (sad)”

Trump is leaving the door open to possibly trying to pull it off sometime next year.
