PGCPS Board Members Report Unauthorized Raises

Several Prince George’s County school board members are citing that some central office employees received large, unauthorized raises. In a letter to county Executive Rushern Baker this week, three board members say the raises ranged from ten-to-12 percent and claimed only schools CEO Kevin Maxwell or his staff could have approved these raises. A spokesperson for Baker says the office received the letter and it will be reviewed and responded to.

Former BalCo Schools Super Pleads Guilty

Former Baltimore County Schools Superintendent Dallas Dance is pleading guilty to filing false financial disclosure statements. Dance entered the plea to four perjury counts during a court appearance this morning in Towson. Although he’ll be formally sentenced at a later date, the plea deal calls for a five-year prison sentence with all but 18 months suspended. During his five years as superintendent, Dance pocketed nearly 150-grand from a consulting company that he owned and helped to negotiate a no-bid contract with the school system for a company for which he worked, all while keeping quiet about the money he earned from those businesses.

Trump Touts Tariffs On Imported Steel, Aluminum

President Trump says broad tariffs on imported steel and aluminum will help level the playing field for American industries. In a White House event today, Trump defended a 25-percent tariff on imported steel and 10-percent on aluminum. Presidents can take such actions if they determine that national economic security is jeopardized. Trump argued that other countries have taken advantage of the U.S. for too long. Several steel and aluminum industry workers joined Trump for the announcement.

Manafort Pleads Not Guilty In VA Federal Court

Former Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort is pleading not guilty in federal court in Virginia today. He faces charges related to fraud and tax evasion, brought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. A judge set a trial date for July 10th. Manafort plead not guilty to similar charges at a federal court in Washington, D.C. last week and a separate trial date was set there for September 17th.
