Early Release Sought For Rayful Edmond

A hearing held today on whether a former DC drug lord could be released from jail early.  Rayful Edmond was a drug kingpin in the Washington, DC in the 1980s. In 1990 he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for drug distribution. Since then, Edmond has worked as a government informant.  Now, after 30 years behind bars federal prosecutors say because of his cooperation, Edmond’s life sentence should be reduced, which could lead to early release. Edmond appeared in court via video.  No decision from the judge today. But, DC’s state’s attorney Karl Racine went before that judge today requesting input before any final decision.  Even if federal charges are reduced, Edmond faces a 30-year sentence in Pennsylvania for selling drugs while in jail.  The next court hearing is scheduled for October.
