Betsy DeVos To Eliminate Student Loan Forgiveness Program

So you know the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, right? It’s a program, created in 2007, where student borrowers can have their school debts erased if they spend 10 years working for a government or nonprofit employer. Well that program could very well be eliminated.

Next week Trump’s administration will release their first detailed budget and the Department of Education‘s budget must be cut by $10.6 billion. Cutting the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program is part of Betsy DeVos‘ proposed cuts.

Instead the White House will propose to lengthen the amount of time Americans will have to spend repaying their debts on income-based plans if they borrowed to get an advanced degree. The Washington Post reports it is unclear how this would affect borrowers currently working toward forgiveness.
