In the latest episode of Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s “Red Table Talk,” Smith and her mom sat down with Grammy award-winning artist, Toni Braxton.

Things got real during their talk as they discussed surviving divorce.

Braxton opened up about her marriage to Keri Lewis, member of the r&b group Mint Condition, and what it was like going through the divorce.

Braxton and Lewis were married for 12 years before divorcing in 2013.

“I hated being divorce. I hated everything about it,” she exclaimed.

Braxton revealed that even though they were legally divorced, the two still tried to rekindle their love for each other and dated for about year and a half following the divorce.

“My husband became my boyfriend, and we were attempting to salvage the relationship again, we were hopeful,” she said. “We dated for a good year and a half, almost two years after we got a divorce.”

She stated how she had hopes of them eventually getting back together and always made sure to leave the kids out of their martial issues.

While opening up about her previous marriage, Smith’s mom, Adrienne Banfield-Jones, related to her feelings of divorce, seeing has how she’s been married three times.

Even though Braxton found the idea of her husband becoming her boyfriend after their divorce crazy, Jones denied the notion saying how one of her ex-husbands proposed the same idea.

The “Breathe Again” singer went on to say that the reason her and Lewis split was because of financial issues. She stated how her having lupus was the reason she couldn’t make any money.

“I felt shallow because my ex-husband and I broke up for money issues,” she explained. “I found out I had lupus at the time, I couldn’t make money because I had lupus, I had to cancel the show. That was my personal contribution to the marriage failing, because who wants to take care of a person who’s sick all the time?”

Braxton revealed that even though Lewis never said he was upset about her illness she still felt as if he was. She also said that she believes things would’ve been different if she wasn’t diagnosed with lupus.

“I always felt like if I didn’t get sick and I could have continued to work, we wouldn’t have had that deficit, it wouldn’t have shown its face, and we would probably have still been together,” she added.

While Braxton did face many downfalls in her previous marriage she expressed how all in all it was a “successful marriage” and Lewis is considered an “extension of [her] family.”

Since the divorce in 2013, the singer has sparked a new fire with rapper and producer, Birdman, and the couple plans to have a wedding soon.
