Beyoncé Gives An Ode to Blackness In Black Is King

Beyoncé at the Lion king Premier

Queen B’s new film “Black Is King” has shaken the table and snatched all wigs !!!!!!!! Finally the world has been given a visual album that celebrates an aspect of black life we are not exposed to on a day to day basis. With the help of the hottest African artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and others, individuals throughout the diaspora feel praised. Bright colors, vivid images, and anecdotes tell the much bigger story of reflection throughout the hour and a half film.

The theme of remembering where we came from rather than learning where we are going presents itself in thought provoking riddles in between songs. “Black is King. We were beauty before we knew what beauty was”. Positive affirmations such as this tell the audience we are more than what we believe we are. The normative theory and methodology presented to us through tactics of Linguicide, Linguifam, violence, and oppression has relegated us to a subclass of human existence reinforcing European ideas that we are second class citizens. Truly we are Kings and Queens and need to carry ourselves as such. The “ode to blackness” in this visual masterpiece is nothing short of inspiring. Beyonce – we thank you.
