Amtrak Derailment North Of Union Station

(Washington, DC) —  There are still some delays after an Amtrak derailment north of Union Station. Police say the lead engine had one set of wheels on and another set off the tracks.  The train with 190 passengers aboard was upright and there were no reports of injuries. It’s not clear at this time how many cars came off the tracks. It happened near H Street Northeast, just outside the station.

Several Businesses Damaged In 3-Alarm Fire

(Upper Marlboro, MD) — Several businesses and apartments are damaged after a fire breaks out in Upper Marlboro. About 100 firefighters battled the three-alarm fire in the 147-hundred block of Main Street around 1:30 this morning. One firefighter was treated on the scene for heat exhaustion but no others injuries were reported. The occupants of three third floor apartments were able to safely escape. .

Man Arrested Near U.S. Capitol For Guns, Ammo

(Washington, DC) — Police say a man was arrested near the U.S. Capitol after officers found a gun and ammo in his car. Police found the weapon in his vehicle which was parked in the 300 block of New Jersey Avenue, Northwest, just north of the Capitol earlier today. That happened not long before Secret Service officers investigated a vehicle at a checkpoint close to the White House. That prompted the closure of Lafayette Park and the North Fence. The lockdown was lifted shortly after. There’s no indication the two incidents were connected.

Abducted Elderly Man Safe

(Washington, DC) — An elderly man who was abducted from southwestern Virginia is safe. Police say 88-year-old John Wimbush was abducted yesterday by Valeria Vianna Condell of Fort Washington. Condell had reportedly been posing as Wimbush’s daughter and police believe she intended to extort money from him. Police say Wimbush is in good health and Condell was arrested in Washington, DC earlier today.
