Winnie Mandela Dies

Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of former South African leader Nelson Mandela, is dead at the age of 81. Her family confirmed her death in a statement today. She was a key figure in the fight to end the racist apartheid system in South Africa. She was married to Nelson Mandela during his incarceration. She was South Africa’s first black First Lady. Her and Nelson Mandela divorced in 1996. They had two children together. She had reportedly been ill for years now, and was recently admitted to a hospital with a kidney infection.

Violent Crime Down, Homicides Up In DC In 2018

The total number of violent crimes in DC in first three months of 2018 is down by 12 percent compared to the same time last year. However, police data shows homicides are up by about 14 percent in the first quarter of this year. The number of robberies in which a gun is used is also up. Police reported 199 incidents in the first three months of 2018 compared with 184 in the corresponding period of 2017.

Cosby Jury Selection Begins Today

The jury is being picked in Bill Cosby’s retrial for sexual assault. More than 180 potential jurors have been called to show up at the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania courthouse. Cosby is accused of drugging and assaulting former Temple University employee Andrea Constand back in 2004. The defense is hoping that the judge will permit a witness who was barred in the first trial to testify in an effort to paint Constand as an extortionist. The judge will allow testimony from five of the more than 60 accusers with similar assault complaints about Cosby. The trial is set to start Monday, April 9th. The first trial ended in a hung jury.

Villanova And Michigan Do Battle In National Title Game

It’s Michigan and Villanova tonight in San Antonio for the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Number-one seed ‘Nova is riding a ten-game winning streak and third-seed Michigan has won 14 in a row. Michigan is after its first NCAA title since 1989. Villanova is playing for its second championship in three years.
