Dear Howard University Community,

Please join us on Friday, March 26 at 7 p.m. EDT for a Virtual Candlelight Vigil Against Hate.

It is Howard’s most sacred duty to stand up to hate – in all forms, against all people. It is not enough to repudiate the shootings; we must also condemn the physical attacks, the verbal assaults, the combative rhetoric, the demonizing behavior and the othering of the Asian-American community. Blood is shed when hate is given sanctuary and intolerance is allowed to persist. The added tragedy of the Colorado shooting only amplifies the need for us to use our unified voices to condemn gun violence and advocate for real change.

During the virtual vigil, I will ask everyone to show their support by taking a photo of themselves holding a candle or flashlight and posting it to social media using the hashtag #EndViolenceNow. Students from the campus community will express their support, and Dean Bernard Richardson will offer prayers for the fallen.
