All Clear at US Capitol After Brief Security Scare

U.S. Capitol was briefly evacuated Wednesday after an aircraft came too close. It turns out the plane was part of a military pre-planned flyover to Nationals Stadium.

Washington, D.C. (Wednesday, April 20, 2022) – The all clear has been given at the U.S. Capitol after a brief scare prompted by an aircraft.

The Capitol had to be evacuated for a short time after police thought an aircraft posed a probable threat.  It turns out it was a pre-planned flyover of a plane carrying members of the U.S. Army Golden Knights who then parachuted to Nationals Park.  But Capitol Police were not alerted of the situation before hand.

The alert from Capitol Police sent congressional staffers fleeing from the Capitol and legislative building around 6:30pm Wednesday.

The breakdown in communication between the military,  the Federal Aviation Administration, and Capitol Police has angered some congressional leaders.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pointed the finger of blame at the FAA saying “its apparent failure to notify Capitol Police of the pre-planned flyover Nationals Stadium is outrageous and inexcusable.”
