Carlee Russell, who called 911 to report a missing toddler walking along a busy interstate highway in Hoover, Alabama, has been charged with falsely reporting an incident and making a false statement to police.
According to the police, Russell was never kidnapped, and her lawyer issued a statement admitting to the hoax. Russell’s parents said she had to “fight for her life” to escape her kidnapper.
Prior to her alleged abduction, Russell used her phone to search for information about Amber Alerts, one-way bus tickets, and Taken, the blockbuster film starring Liam Neeson about a pair of women that are kidnapped by human traffickers.
If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail or a year of labor in the county, as well as a $6,000 fine.
Russell’s boyfriend Thomar Latrell Simmons, has since deleted a post on his Instagram that went viral partly because he described her condition as being physically dire. He later said he was “disgusted” by Russell’s kidnapping hoax.
