The 31-year-old Canadian Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, professionally known as rapper/singer Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Pete, known as rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020.

The jury found him guilty of three counts: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered handgun in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

In July 2020, Tory, Megan, and another friend Kelsey Harris, were in an SUV leaving Kylie Jenner’s party in the Hollywood Hills. Pete testified in court that Lanez pointed the gun at her and yelled for her to “dance, bi**h” as he shot her in the back of the foot while she walked away.

“Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace,” Megan wrote in a statement.

Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford sentenced Lanez, saying how difficult it was to decide for the father and good friend that others described him during the trial. “Sometimes good people do bad things,” Herriford said. “Actions have consequences, and there are no winners in this case.”

Lanez’s family and supporters argued Megan and influential figures in music unjustly brought on his prosecution. Lanez’s lawyers plan to appeal the conviction.

“If I could turn back the series of events that night and change them,” I would, Lanez continued. “The victim was my friend. The victim is someone I still care for to this day.”

He added, “Everything I did wrong that night, I take full responsibility for.”
