John Amos, the beloved actor known for his roles as James Evans Sr in Good Times, Toby in Roots, and Gordy on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, passed away at 84 in Los Angeles on August 21st.

His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, announced his father’s passing. In a statement he said, “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.” 

Amos’ career spanned over five decades, with standout performances in Good Times, Roots, and films like Coming to America. He was a vocal advocate for positive portrayals of African Americans in the entertainment industry, leaving a lasting impact on the industry and those who knew him. His representation, Buchwald, expressed pride in representing Amos and highlighted his remarkable talent and generous spirit.
