The beloved Derrick Ward of News4 passed away Tuesday from complications of cardiac arrest at the age of 62.
We honor his journalistic imprint in the community as he was known for his knowledge gained through experience and enthusiastic journalism style, Derrick gave his encounter during the 1968 riots for the 40th anniversary of News4. Ward was a proud HD Woodson High School alum and the University of Maryland.
His lasting contributions began with a career in radio covering everything from the Iran-Contra hearings, the September 11 attack on The Pentagon, and the Washington D.C. Sniper shootings.
He is survived by his three children, Derrick Jr., Marisa, and Ian.

The statement to News4 continues, “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Derrick Ward, Sr., on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, following complications from a recent cardiac arrest. Derrick has been an inspiration and cherished member of our family and his hometown community, as a longtime reporter at News4 Washington, and previously WTOP Radio. As a distinguished journalist, Derrick’s storytelling, prolific writing, warmth, and humor touched countless lives. Our children and our entire family will miss him dearly.
