According to Essence, award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay will be honored with the 10th Great Americans Medal by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History for her impactful work in Hollywood.
Known for projects like Selma and 13th, DuVernay will receive the 14-karat gold medal for her storytelling that challenges societal norms and sheds light on America’s history. The Great Americans Medal Awards Program recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact in their fields, with DuVernay embodying the ethos of the initiative.
The ceremony, featuring a conversation between DuVernay and David M. Rubenstein, will stream live on May 8, celebrating DuVernay’s contributions as a director, writer, producer, and distributor.
