History of WHUR
WHUR 96.3 FM – Howard University is Washington’s only stand-alone radio station and one of the few university-owned commercial radio stations in America, broadcasting since 1971 to nearly a half million listeners daily in five states and can now be heard around the globe on the web at whur.com. The first radio station in the Washington area to broadcast in HD, WHUR is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious NAB Marconi for Best Urban Station of the Year and NAB Crystal Radio Award for Excellence in Community Service.
Howard University’s WHUR-FM Radio officially converted to digital broadcasting on Wednesday, January 21, 2004, becoming the first commercial radio station in the metropolitan Washington area to use a digital signal or HD RadioTM technology. A little more than two-and-a-half years later, on November 16, 2006, WHUR-WORLD, 96.3 HD-2 was launched, offering new programming options of a progressive mix of music and information and the same high-quality sound as our parent station WHUR.
Musical programming on WHUR-WORLD is jazz-intensive and also features blues, soul, hip-hop, African-American folk, and world music. Other periodic short- and long-form programming elements include “Black History Moments,” fitness tips, and social and cultural specials, as well as provocative weekly talk shows shedding light on issues ranging from money matters to domestic abuse. Called “the other side of WHUR,” the WHUR-WORLD signal is also streamed on www.whurworld.com.
WHUR WORLD was the distinguished recipient of the 2008 NAB HD Radio Multicast award for its innovative work in programming on a multicast channel.
