Growing school safety concerns in Charles County

La Plata HS principal says threat of violence “not credible”

The Charles County Sheriff Department has been very busy over the last few weeks addressing issues involving students found with weapons on campus. A 14-year-old was taken into custody this week for bringing a loaded handgun to his school La Plata High School. He will be charged as a juvenile in this matter.

On Thursday police in Charles County filed criminal charges against a 17-year-old La Plata High School student who made online threats of violence. That student threatened to shoot students on Friday. The school’s principle Douglass Dolan sent letters home to parents. He stated the threat was “not credible”. The stories and arrests have many in the community on edge. In response school leaders are planning to hold a community meeting on school safety and the recent arrests and charges at 7 p.m. at La Plata High School in the auditorium.
