Worldwide Climate Change Student Walk Out, Today

The plan is for students to leave school and walk to the White House and then the U.S. Capitol today starting at 11 a.m. This walkout is ahead of a major protest planned by Shut Down D.C. Strike Coalition on Monday.

Students frustrated with the government inaction on climate change have decided to take the matter into their own hands. The D.C. Youth Climate Strike is planning to hold a walk today.

The plan is for students to leave school and walk to the White House and then the U.S. Capitol today starting at 11 a.m. This walkout is ahead of a major protest planned by Shut Down D.C. Strike Coalition on Monday. Climate Change activists are looking to block major intersections in the city to stop traffic and bring attention to their cause. They want lawmakers to take action on climate change now.

As for the students that choose to walk out of school today. Here are what area school leaders are saying. In the District of Columbia students who walk out of class have 5 days in which to turn in a letter from their parents permitting them to take part. In Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties students who walk out of class will be given an unexcused absence. In Fairfax County, Virginia students will only receive an excused absence if they were notified in advance that they were taking part in today’s protest.


DC Police say they are fully prepared to handle any First Amendment assemblies of any stature.
