Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, internships with the Howard University Radio Network will be conducted in a hybrid model, with in-person and virtual sessions. Internship formats are subject to change at the discretion of the Howard University Radio Network leadership. H.U.R.N. will follow all Howard University COVID-19 guidelines. The following internships are available.
The Howard University Radio Network is committed to providing a professional work experience for students interested in communications.
Students can be assigned to work at any station on the network based on the needs of the network. The student’s interests and qualifications are also a major determining factor.

Internship Positions
All internships are unpaid and are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. There are several types of internships available.
- Promotions – Students will assist with stations promotional needs including logging merchandise, packaging prizes, and on-site event assistance.
- News/Public Affairs – Students will assist with show research, writing copy, booking guests, and other news related duties. (Candidates should have an interest in journalism, news, reporting, and community service. They must also be able to write and think critically.)
- Programming – Students will assist in on-air work, including social media and show research for the Afternoon Drive show. (Students must be available between the hours of 1:30pm-5:30pm for the Afternoon Drive show.)
- Social Media – Students will assist in social media content including writing and creating content for digital platforms.
- Production – Students who assist in production of elements of broadcast including commercials and public service announcements. Students applying for production must be familiar with either Adobe Audition or Pro Tools and must submit a production portfolio.
- Sales – Students will learn about and assist with radio advertisements.
Qualifications
To be considered for an internship within the Network, one must:
- Be a registered student at Howard University (Non-Howard students may only apply for summer internships)
- Be in good academic standing (at least 2.5 GPA)
- Students seeking an internship for class credit must be registered in one of the practicum classes and be a graduating senior.

Student Skills
Students can be BUT DO NOT HAVE TO BE familiar with the following equipment and software:
- Basic computer skills
- Social media platforms
- MUST HAVE basic writing skills
