15-Year-old Girl Killed In Latest Gunfire In DC

Washington, D.C. (Monday, April 15, 2024) – D.C. police say a 15-year-old girl was fatally shot overnight in the 2400 block of Elvans Road, SE. Initial reports indicate the girl was not the intended target. Police are looking for a silver SUV with a black top last seen on Stanton Road fleeing the area.

Police say Niomi Russell was shot Sunday night while standing with a group of friends outside an apartment building. She is the 4th juvenile killed in DC this year. Her mother, Precious Fernandez, told the Washington Post, she moved her family from SE last Thursday to NW to escape the violence in the SE community. Niomi was back in the area to visit with her friends from the old neighborhood when she was killed.

Residents in the area tell WHUR they are fed up with the violence and they want police and the Skyline apartment management to do more to safeguard their community.
