1619: From Africans To African-Americans

An examination of the origins of slavery and the impact of the 400th anniversary of 1619.

2019 marks the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans on the shores of the Virginia Colony in 1619.  It signaled the beginning of slavery in America.  To commemorate this historic event, thousands have traveled to what is now Hampton, Virginia and Ghana in West Africa.  They are paying homage to what’s being called “The Year of Return”.  We examine the origins of the slavery in America and the impact in modern times.
