Bethune Statue To Be Unveiled At U.S. Capitol

She’ll be the first African-American honored in the National Statuary Hall.

(Washington, DC) — A tribute to a Florida woman will be unveiled in Washington, DC this week. The statue of Bethune-Cookman University founder Mary McLeod Bethune will be revealed on Wednesday at the US Capitol. She’ll be the first African-American honored in the National Statuary Hall. Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry will be there for the historic occasion. He tells the News-Journal this is the singular achievement in the history of our community, and the crowning glory for a woman worthy of sainthood.
