(Washington, DC) — A member of the D.C. Council wants to change the way the city’s traffic ticket and parking laws are enforced. Ward Eight Councilmember Trayon White, Senior wants to keep the D.C. government from doubling parking fines after 30 days. He feels a ten or 15-dollar penalty should be imposed for fines that are unpaid after 90 days. White also wants to offer a six-month grace period on unpaid fines and allow those with unpaid parking debts the opportunity to register one of their vehicles with the city. White says the city’s “harsh penalties” for unpaid tickets are disproportionately affecting Black and lower-income residents.
