D.C. Approves Digital Driver’s Licenses

The ID can be shown to enter government buildings, to purchase liquor or to present to police officers during traffic stops.

(Washington, DC) — The District has become the latest to join the list of states approving digital driver’s licenses. City Council approved the measure allowing for digital licenses and photo IDs. Under the council’s actions, the District’s Department of Motor Vehicles has the authority to issue digital licenses that can be stored on a motorist’s smartphone or other mobile device. The ID can be shown to enter government buildings, to purchase liquor or to present to police officers during traffic stops. The DMV will be charged with developing plans for the digital IDs once the measure is signed into law.
