(Washington, DC) — Homeowners are being reminded about D.C.’s requirements for clearing snow from sidewalks bordering their property. The Winter Sidewalk Safety Act requires snow and ice to be removed during the first eight hours of daylight after a snowstorm ends. Fines can be assessed if sidewalks aren’t cleared after 24 hours. The Department of Public Works does provide exemptions for residents who are disabled as well as those 65-years-old and older, though online registration for that program is currently closed.
