DC Police Launch Fall Crime Prevention Initiative

The 60-day measure is a lot like the campaign that the department does every summer.

DC Polic Chief Peter Newsham is responding to seven homicides in 72 hours with the announcement of a fall crime prevention initiative.

The 60-day measure is a lot like the campaign that the department does every summer. This program will focus on putting more officers in known crime areas, working to get illegal guns off the streets, targeting repeat offenders and creating more outreach opportunities with young people.

Here are the numbers for this District. There have been 140 homicides this year. MPD says they saw a 26% drop in overall crime and a 22% decline in violent crime.

Some of the areas on the radar for police include Southwest, the U Street corridor, Columbia Heights, Shaw, Saratoga, Greenway, Congress Heights, and Washington Highlands.
