DC School Official Seeks Better Sexual Assault Reporting

The resolution calls for families to be notified faster and that students can report incidents anonymously to officials

(Washington, DC) — One member of the D.C. State Board of Education is calling for better reporting of sexual assault cases. Doctor Carlene Reid, who represents Ward 8 on the State Board of Education, says she has drafted a resolution in the wake of an attack inside Ballou High School in Southeast D.C. In that incident in mid-March, parents of school children were not notified of the incident until the day after the attack when a parent posted about the attack on social media. Reid’s resolution calls for families to be notified faster and that students can report incidents anonymously to officials. The recommendation is expected to be considered during the State Board’s Advocacy and Outreach Committee meeting tomorrow.
