(Washington, DC) — Support and opposition for DC statehood is falling along party lines. A hearing on a bill to make DC the 51st state was held in the House today for the first time in more than two decades. Local lawmakers and supportive Democrats made the case that DC residents deserve the full benefits of citizenship. Republicans kicked off the hearing by calling the city too corrupt and financially dependent on the federal government to become a state.
