Michael Sumler, affectionately known as “Chicago Mike” and a beloved member of the legendary group Kool & the Gang, has died at the age of 71 following a car crash in Cobb County, Georgia, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Sumler was more than a performer—he was a magnetic force on stage, known for energizing crowds and bringing soulful energy to every performance. Behind the scenes, he was a mentor and connector, often described as a bridge between rising talent and established legends in the music industry.
Adrian Meeks of Song Source Music Group reflected on the tragic loss, calling it “a devastating blow.”
“He always wanted to see other people succeed in the business that he’d been around most of his life,” Meeks said. “He was the bridge—for inspiring artists, songwriters, producers, and musicians to the legends.”
Sumler is remembered as a kind, thoughtful, and intelligent man whose presence left an indelible mark on those around him. His legacy of mentorship and music will continue to inspire future generations.
