Maryland Renames Appellate Courts

The changes come after voters approved a constitutional amendment.

(Undated) — The state of Maryland has changed the names of its two highest courts. The Court of Appeals is now the Supreme Court of Maryland and the presiding judge is now known as the Chief Justice. The Court of Special Appeals is now the Appellate Court of Maryland. The changes come after voters approved a constitutional amendment to rename the appellate courts to clears up confusion among the public, lawyers and judges from other jurisdictions about the roles of the respective courts.
