New Law Protects Hairstyles

A new law aims to protect those discriminated against because of their hair

(Rockville, MD) — It is now illegal to discriminate against someone based on their hair in Montgomery County. Lawmakers approved a measure, known as the Crown Act, that protects residents who wear their natural hairstyles like locks and curls from discrimination. Anyone who faces discrimination because of their hairstyles can seek a civil penalty of up to five-thousand-dollars through the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights. The county said the aim of the new law was meant to limit prejudice felt by residents. Montgomery County becomes the first local jurisdiction to introduce such a law.
