(Upper Marlboro, MD) – Prince George’s County police say at least 13 people have fallen victim to a familiar tech support scam, which cost the victims approximately 287-thousand dollars. The scam targets individuals with pop-up messages that warn their computer may have a virus or other problem. They are then directed to speak with a bogus tech support agent, who remotely connects with their computer and then convinces the victim to transfer money from their bank accounts into wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards. The average age of the victims is 69. The Federal Trade Commission says no legitimate tech company will contact out of the blue with messages; anyone who may have been a victim of such a scam is asked to call the police.
