(Tuesday, July 2,2024) – Prince George’s County fire officials say a man and woman were killed in an early morning apartment fire at 81 Harry Truman Drive in Largo. That two-alarm blaze also critically injured a young boy. The names of the victims have not yet been released. But fire officials say they all lived in the same top floor apartment.
The blaze broke out around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday and it took more than 100 firefighters to bring the blaze under control. A dog inside the apartment was rescued. Fire officials had to perform CPR on the pet to revive the black pit bull. One man who lives in the apartment complex and is a fire cadet says he was awakened to fire alarms. “I first thought it was a drill. But I quickly realized there was a real fire and jumped up to check the door,” said Avery Vick.
Using his training as a cadet, the 18-year-old Vick was able to wake up his parents and get them out of the apartment safely. 12 families have been displaced by the fire. County officials and the Red Cross are working to assist those impacted.
Meantime, Prince George’s County fire crews are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
